ALEC is a primary method for the institutionalization of industrial agriculture and corporate agribusiness leviathans. Vast monocrops, DDT, Agent Orange, synthetic hormones, GMOs, and “terminator” seeds are now adverse realities in our food systems thanks to ALEC and its member corporations.
ALEC has developed model legislation that would:
- Prevent local and community efforts to ban biotech and GMO crops from their communities, under the argument that biotechnology is heavily regulated enough.
- Prohibit communities and local governments from preventing pesticide use in their area.
- Protect industrial agribusiness such as factory farms from regulation. Citizens in rural communities would be unable to address grievances such as animal abuse, air pollution, groundwater contamination, or excessive waste or odor.
The following list is just a microcosmic look at a few ALEC-member corporations involved in the decline of our global food systems and development of mass capital driven technics as the new “pinnacle” of food production.
Bayer AG – Major pharmaceutical, biotech, and agrochemical corporation. Among other controversies ranging from drug safety to animal testing, Bayer is notorious for its role in the global market for GMOs, pesticides and other agribusiness stables. It is one of the four largest biotechnology corporations in the world.
Cargill, Inc.- One of the largest agribusinesses and industrial meat producers in the world and the second largest private corporation in the world. Cargill is the largest importer of palm oil, infamous for orangutan extinction, deforestation, climate change and slave labor.
